Transcript of Episode 1: Introduction
Hey, it's Hannah. You're listening to the first episode of The Fifteen Minute Feminist. I'm really glad that you're here. Thanks for taking the time to listen :) We're going to be taking a brief look at the history we weren't taught in schools. I know, like many of us, last summer I started learning things about history I had no idea happened and people I had no idea had existed. I got the idea to share some of this information in an easy-to-access, quick way called The Fifteen Minute Feminist.
It's a podcast, but I'm also going to make it accessible via transcript on the website thefifteenminutefeminist.com, as well as on YouTube with captions! Those won't be the auto-generated captions, by the way. I will make sure those are accurate. Oh! Any images that I post on social media, will have image descriptions for screen readers. I want to make sure the show is as accessible as possible, so please let me know if there's anything else I can do to make it so.
The idea for the podcast started by wanting to showcase women, and the past because typically our history textbooks, focus on men, but then I started realizing that women weren't the only people overlooked in history. There are also a lot of people of color and trans and non-binary people who have been overlooked or intentionally erased from our textbooks and curriculum. I'm really excited because I don't know all of this stuff already, so I'm gonna get to do a lot of research to find out about a lot of really awesome people - and then I get to tell you about it! It's gonna be super fun.
As much as I would love to stick with a topic or time period, and just release a whole bunch of episodes focused on that in a row, that's not going to happen, because I would become absolutely paralyzed with the stress of getting it right, and getting all of the important people of, say, the Civil War in one section, and I would just never get started, so it's going to bounce around, and I apologize for that. I'll see if there's a way to categorize them on the website, but I make no promises. I'm also not super sure about when episodes will be coming out. I would love to get to a point where I can do once a week but, but, I'm a college student. So, maybe once a month. Hopefully that's the minimum. We'll see.
If there's a person or event that you would like to see me cover on the show, please let me know. I am on Instagram, @thefifteenminutefeminist, there's the website thefifteenminutefeminist.com and thefifteenminutefeminist@gmail.com. I'm thinking about making a TikTok too, so let me know if that's something you would like to see as well.
Our first content based episode will be coming out in the next few days. I'm going to be talking about Edmonia Lewis, who was the first professional African American sculptor, and she's pretty bomb, so check that out when it comes out. Stay tuned on the Instagram for announcements about new episodes coming up and I'll talk to you soon!
